Did you know that your About Page is the second most viewed page on your website (after the home page)? But it seems to be the most often overlooked. You must take advantage of your About Page to engage your readers.
When people visit a website, the About Page is where they go to find out what kind of site it is and who's behind it. This is a great opportunity for you to make a great first impression and get visitors to become subscribers and, hopefully, customers.
1. What should your About Page be about?
Your About Page should state your company's overall mission. It should provide readers with information about who you are and why they should care. You want to convince your visitors that they are in the right place.
2. Why would someone read your About Page?
Well, it depends on who "they" are. They might be first time visitors who stumbled across your website through a web search or social media link, or by a referral. Use your About Page as an opportunity to convince this first-time visitor that you have a lot of value to offer so they subscribe to your list.
Regular visitors to your site want to make sure that they aren't wasting their time, so be concise about why they should keep coming back.
And yet other visitors might be people you have contacted through other social media sites who are interested in working with you in some capacity. For example, if I strike up a conversation with someone of Facebook, the first place I go is to their website to find more info about them.
3. So, how do you write a good About Page ?
Well, I'm an elementary school teacher by day and during writing class, I teach my students about the 5 W's and an H. This is a useful framework when writing your About Page.
- Who are you?
- What is it that you do?
- When did you start your business?
- Where are you located?
- Why do you do what you do?
- How are you accomplishing your mission?

This is just one example of the many ways you can write your About Page. My advice, every time you visit a website, check out their About Page. See what others are doing? Ask yourself these questions as you read: Does it answer the 5 W's and an H? Does it answer the questions that you have about the site? Do you still have unanswered questions? What other elements could be included (ie graphics, a video, etc).
Then write your own!
